20140621 – Exploding tyre; Mormon overdose, but still only one wife

Saturday – sun and cloud. Warm.

IMG 4206

Up early to return the Hertz mobile and then off to play at Mountain Hosting. We each get 12 park passes which we can use to give free rides for friends and family.

Tod brings in donuts for his team – very much an American thing.Real nice gesture. Good god if I’d have done that in the Arc they’d have had me declared insane and carted me off.  Easy day on the Plaza. You do have to stand back in amazement at the public at large. Kids climbing on rock while parents stand by and ignore our requests for them to get down; mountain bikers suddenly going deaf or loosing the ability to comprehend English (well American really) as they’re asked to walk.

Classic for the day is family whose daughter stayed in England. Daughter couldn’t remember the name of the small village. Then comes the classic “Can you think of the name of it?”. 2 months later we’ll have probably gone through the name of them all. Never mind at least they got the
country right – we hope.

There’s a free bike demo day on the mountain. You get to try out as many bikes as you like for free. Can you believe some of these bikes cost $7,000 or more. Starting price seems to be around $2,000. Pop up seats at the touch of a button, carbon fibre frames, gears galore, suspension front and rear, and loads of other gizmos seem to be in abundance. Put’s my $200 Walmart special in it’s place. Mind you it does the job for me.

Sunday – warm, sun and cloud.

After our 5 days in the wilderness, on the go 12 hours a day plus yesterdays hosting we’re ready for a day of rest.IMG 4209 You have to give religion some brownie points, they certainly got the day of rest concept right.

I go off for a mountain bike ride around Round Valley. Tried my first blue run, mainly because I was lost. Certainly shakes me eyeballs out, worse than riding a pneumatic drill in speedos. I’ve lost all sensation in me hands. Can someone go and move all them rocks please.

In the evening we watch TV. Geez, 9 episodes of pure retarded crap. Geez, the 10th was good, even if the ending was ludicrous. Geez, thank the FSM it’s all over. Paul Bunyan and Babe the blue Ox can relax, no more being portrayed as back country knuckle draggers. What am I on about? It’s that dam Fargo series. We must have been stupid to watch anything past the first episode.

Monday – warm and sunny, again.

Wendy’s off doing her Florence Nightingale good deed for the week. I’m off for for a hike.

IMG 4212

Catch a free ride up Crescent lift. Pick up Mid-Mountain trail across the mountain and then down Armstrong trail back to the base. I thought these walks would be up and down the ski runs I know so well. Thankfully they’re not. They zig zag up the mountain. When you cross a blue ski run you look up and down, wonder how the hell you ever ski down it and thanks the FSM that you don’t have to walk up or down it. When you cross a black run you look up, but avoid looking down, to horrendous to contemplate.

A great 9.5 mile “Hike” in 3.5 hours.2,308 calories equates to 4 bottles of wine.

Interesting how the word “Thank you” seems to be disappearing from the American language. As you step aside to let bikers past, without them needing to loose momentum, it never ceases to amaze me how many of them are such scrots that they can’t even say thank you. What’s happened. America never used to be like this. When we
first started coming we were amazed at the politeness and good manners of all, inkling and especially the youngsters. Obviously down to the parents. You only have to encounter Angela to realise what good manners really are.

Attended the briefing by PCMR’s lawyer on the PCMR v Taliker / Vail fiasco.

They’ve ALL got to go to mediation and report back to judge by 8/17/14.

If that doesn’t resolve the issue then 8/27 back to court. Judge could force eviction but sounds unlikely. PCMR would appeal to Utah Supreme Court anyway. Once all the issues have been tried the judge cannot deny them an appeal, at the moment they haven’t all been tried.

Appeal could take 18 months. Lawyer is more confident that SC will come in their favour as Utah currently IMG 4214 pplies a very strict interpretation on late renewal, whereas the majority of the country tends to use the “fountain rules” for deciding such issues – sounds a more common sense method. Trial judges have to strictly interpret the law whereas SC can change / influence.

Looks like the only winners will be the lawyers, now there’s a surprise, as if mediation doesn’t resolve it there will be 2 more high fee years. Even if they fail in the Utah SC it can be referred to US SC, more bigger fees / delays.

PCMR seem to be in a good position as they own base, water rights and there’s a ban on major developments on the mountain by Vail etc as a condition of them building the Montage.  Good analogy is Vail may own the dinning room (mountain), but the kitchen, tap water and car park (base area) are owned by PCMR.

Tuesday – warm and sunny.

Lazy morning.

DSC04556

Biked 6 miles on my Round Valley route and then there was a giant explosion, just as I was getting the some speed up and the wind ruffling my hair. Thought I’d been attacked by a Taliban sniper, but front inner tube had exploded and was split. Had to walk home. Although to be fair, in typical American friendly fashion, two fellow MTB’s stopped and offered to fix my tyre for me with their spare inner tube. Moral of the story, 1 don’t pump your tyres up to high; 2 carry a spare inner tube; 3 carry a small pump.

Nat and Paul arrived in the afternoon. Pleasant evening meal and time catching up.

Wednesday – warm and sunny, again.

Did our tourist guide thing and took Nat and Paul into Park City for a tour of Main Street. Followed by a pleasant lunch at the Bridge Cafe. Then free ride up Town lift and down Payday to see the mountain scenery. Paul and I have a free ride down the zip line.

Thursday – cool and rain in the evening.

Take Nat and Paul down to Salt Lake to visit Mormon Temple Square. We got our daily dose of religion.

Excellent free (my sort of word) tour around the Mormon Temple Square. Mormons are so pleasant and respectful. When we’re volunteering on the mountain you can always tell the Mormons who have been on their two year mission by their demeanour and way they speak to you, it really does seem to teach them great interaction skills, respect and consideration for others. They certainly have no problems coping
with most of my probing questions, although they did struggle a bit with issues on hell and bronze, silver and gold membership of heaven.

As usual all very interesting, including an impressive 1 hour film, and unlike most churches and religious sites no one had their hand in my pocket ferreting for money.

Decided not to sign up. One wife is more than enough.

Lovely dinner in the Garden restaurant overlooking Temple Square followed by Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehersal – free. Cheeky devils were singing “My country, tis of thee” to the our National Anthem. Resisted the temptation to stand and sing our National Anthem, although Wendy did have to be restrained by Nat and Paul.

Friday – cool and cloudy.

Nat and Paul set off to continue their tour and visit Idaho. Is there anything there other than Sun Valley ski resort and a lot of potatoes.

Trip down to Home Depot, with Hal, to buy a umbrella for our deck. You so need the shade here, the sun just fries you. Home Depot’s an experience, just like B&Q but on steroids. Wendy looks after Angela, making paper flowers, drawing and no visit from Angela would be complete without some iPad time.

Saturday – hot and sunny.

It’s mountain hosting day yet again. These days fly round.

Yet more joys of the American public unleashed. Todays little gem comes from a couple who wanted to fly down the Zip Line. I explain all about it and what a great ride it is. “So how do we get down?” With an incredulous look I reply “You come down the zip line”. “Yes, but how do we get down from the top?”. This conversation is repeated at least 3 times when before they finally grasp the concept.

20140615 – Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks

Sunday – short rain shower start to the day, then warn with sun and clouds.

DSC04271

Lazy morning then a MTB ride around Round Valley. Did my usual route apart from a short variation to avoid Cammys hill. Whilst the 12 year BMX sage from the other day may have said “there’s no shame in walking up”. I wonder what he’d have thought about my walking down a section. It was that steep I even had trouble walking down, steeper than a black ski run – frightening. I don’t think even my brakes would have held me.

Anyway awesome ride and fitness must be improving, managed to clip 18 minutes off a 112 minute ride. Improved pace from 8.33 minutes per mile down to 7.29. Not that I’m getting obsessive.

Hal and Randy come round in the evening for dinner. Roast and veg of course – got to have
 the 5 a week.

Monday – warm and sunny.

Pick up me Hertz mobile up. Fantastic free upgrade from the cheapest compact going to a Chrysler 300C AWD DSC04091luxury sedan, a real pleasure to drive, comfortable, massive and all the bells and whistles you can think of. But what’s happening to the country? Have car designers no shame? I took one look at it and thought yes, 15MPG, that’ll get me more points towards me green card. But bugger me if the dam thing doesn’t have Eco mode and manages mid 30s MPG. Mind you it will win the “Detroit Witless Design of the Year” award for hiding the petrol cap release button – unbelievable  stupidity.

Could definitely get to like this keyless ignition. Heated steering wheel and seats, that come on automatically when cold, very nice but drives you nuts. Even has cooled  / vented seats. I wonder if they come on automatically when very hot. Meanwhile the voice on the Hertz never lost sounds like some half witted reatard that sounds like a toothless Tennessee moonshiner’s moll. By the time we reach JacksonHole I’m ready to do a Van Gough and slit both me ears off.

DSC04105

Takes us just 4 hours to get to Jackson Hole, one of my favourite Cowboy Towns.

Check in at the Quality Inn and Suites 49’er at Jackson Hole. More on that place later.

Visit the National Park visitor centre to buy our annual park pass (only $80) and plan our Tuesday in the Grand Teton National Park. Then drive back down past Jackson Hole ski mountain resort. We skied there some years ago. Not one of my favourite ski resorts. See a majestic Great Grey Owl – see picture – and can certainly understand why it’s called Great, it was about 30” tall – awesome.

Stroll down to the town square for dinner. Just miss the town square shoot out. The place is DSC04149 infested with a plague of Japs. You can hardly move without having you’re eye taken out by a fast panning telescopic lens.

Have dinner at the famous Millionaire Cowboy Saloon. Elk and Bison mixed grill for dinner was delicious and well prepared and unusual for an American restaurant – quality and not excessive quantity. Aptly named place, expensive.

Pick up a bottle of wine on the way back to hotel.

Tuesday – cold, some sun and no snow despite it being forecast.

It’s colder than a brass toilet seat on the shady side of Grand Teton. Thankfully we had our ski gear with us so we survived and at least the forecast snow held off.

Mediocre breakfast then drive down to Jenny Lake. Catch the ferry across the lake and then take a “hike” up to the Hidden Waterfall and then bravely on to Inspiration Point. I say bravely because part of the path and the drop-DSC04169offs was way over my tolerance limit. But I made it without incident, even if coming down was a tad tortuous. No I hate heights – that scared you couldn’t drive a wet watermelon seed up me butt with a sledge hammer. Views from Inspiration Point were worth the hike.

Then we took a drive around the loop road. Calling off at most of the key stop off for photographs. Called in at Signal Mountain Lodge where Wendy managed to buy a colourful belt she’d been admiring but couldn’t find one big enough. Can you believe it Wendy had to get a Large belt to fit around her waist!

Had afternoon tea and coffee at the Jackson Lake Lodge. Very grand and dignified, even had a live pianist playing along with massive comfortable settees to sink into – very civilised.

Finish the loop drive. Pick up some wine at Albertsons. Wine’s more expensive here than in the religious, anti-DSC04199alcohol state of Utah. Then it’s a spicy Italian Sandwich for me and a Turkey Reubens for Wendy over at the Sandwich cafe. A great cheap meal. Mind you a Reubens really needs to have Pastrami on it.

Wednesday – cold and snowing. Thank the FSM it’s summer or else it cold be really cold.

Up early and check out of the 49’er Hotel.

Well what can I say abut the Quality Inn and Suites 49’er in Jackson:

DSC04284

On the good side the room was clean, comfortable and nicely furnished although a tad on the dark side. Staff were very friendly.

On the downside. Breakfast can best be described as mediocre and they’d run out of scramble eggs – supplier let them down. No USA Today – another supplier let them down. Is there a theme here. Of course management couldn’t figure out to nip down the street to a newsagent and buy some – too much lateral thinking to expect. Door to room was a nightmare to open, more badly designed than a soup sandwich. TV remote didn’t work. All minor annoyances but clearly demonstrates poor management, which is becoming a recurring feature with Choice Hotels these days. Perhaps it’s time for a change of brand loyalty after many years.

Anyway on check out I suppose if I hand over $300 instead of the $350 on the bill, management will have no problem with my lame brain excuse that my bank let me down with supplying dollars.

Drive up through Grand Tetons National Park into Yellowstone. At times there’s a raging snow blizzard blowing, DSC04371 ind it is 8,500 feet up, and it’s obvious they’ve had quite a bit of snow up there. Fortunately we have all of our ski gear so manage to survive the day.

Check in at the Grant Village Lodge for two nights.

Drive up to the Old Faithful Geyser and catch one of its 2 minute performances, one every 94 minutes. Fortunately by now the suns out and it has stopped snowing. I was pretty impressed but Wendy’s comment was, “well is that all there is to it”. Definitely under-awed by it.

DSC04417

Have afternoon tea and coffee in the Old Faithful Inn. A very impressive old natural wood hotel – awesome structure. Mind you can’t say much for the service.

Drive back and stop off at Kepler Cascade for more photos.

Back to our room for a coffee. They’ve one of these yuppie Keurig coffee machines. I’ve been dying to try one.  Dam thing wouldn’t work until I slammed the lid down, obviously likes being treated rough. Coffee was mediocre. If you have a tea after a coffee then the teas polluted with coffee grinds. Now thats clever. You spend fortune on a machine. They then have you by the short and curlies for buying overpriced, mediocre coffees with limited choice. Confirms my innate prejudice against such gimmicks – best avoided.

Go for dinner at the Grant Village Dining Room. We had a starter each that was bigger than the main course. I had a delicious Elk steak. Wendy had ice cold Elk and Bison meat loaf along with ice cold potatoes, she sent it back. Then the 2nd one was just as cold. She told them to stuff it.

Thursday – sun and cloud. Warmed up by dinner time.

DSC04420

Up early and had breakfast at the General Store grill. Then it’s off for a drive around the loop road to see all the major sites in one day.

Yellowstone. Wilderness, no wifi. Can you believe that? How do people survive here? No cellular either.
We’re sat on top of one of the Worlds biggest active volcanoes.

Bad news is it hasn’t erupted for 640,000 years, so could be due anytime.

DSC04431

Good news is that if it does kick off then we’re in the best place, with a quick hellfire death, rather than a lingering nuclear winter that such an eruption would cause.

Given the risk of an eruption I’m surprised the health and safety numbskulls haven’t surrounded all 2 million acres with “DO NOT ENTER” tape and declared it off limits to the public.

By the way it’s big, America of course it has to be, it’s awesome and it needs weeks to do it justice.
Pictures may follow if we ever reach civilisation.

By the end of our exhausting 12 hour day, I think we’re geysered out. More geysers, thermal
springs, mud pots, sulphur cauldrons and the like, than anywhere in the world.

IMG 4039

Also smelt the bubbling sulphur cauldron. If this is what Hell smells like then I definitely don’t want to go there. I’ll be really good from now on. I promise! Perhaps I’d better get religion. Pascal’s wager might be a safer bet than the Flying Spaghetti Monster, but it’s such a weaklings compromise. Mind you at least with the FSM there’s no hell.

Highlight of Thursday had to be seeing a real live Black and a Grizzly bear. Wendy was orgasmic – much more impressed than she was of Old Faithful. Even if we did create a major traffic jam photographing them. But Mr Ranger Sir moved us on. They’re definitely about, bears that is. Evidenced by some fresh looking bear poo, but Wendy wasn’t for dipping her finger in to see if it DSC04476was still hot.

Just get back in time for a nice cool beer and a Reubens at the Lake house in Grant Village:

Good

Staff very friendly well trained and motivated. Quick service but why they make such a dogs breakfast of delivering a beer. Another example of American job creation schemes and lack of common sense.  Pay, bar, beer hand it over – it’s oh so simple.

Bad

Sadly this place isn’t really too hot (pardon the sarcasm) on DSC04462 ood food and the menu distinctly lacks imagination. The cook / warmer upper even seemed to have problems toasting a Reubens without charcoalling it. Sadly we were so tired and hungry we’d have eat the fur off a fried grizzly.

When you watch Americans eat it’s a wonder table knife manufacturers haven’t gone out of business.

Friday – warm and sunny.

Check out of the Grant Village Lodge:

Good

The only place with availability when we booked 3 months ago. Cheapest place around. Quick check in. Clean and comfortable. Basic room with two double beds.

Bad

IMG 4110

A tad basic. Silly Keurig coffee machine. Main dislike was the cuddly black bear toy on the bed. People might think it was free. It wasn’t. Kids would fall in love with it and myther parents for it. Take it home and it was charged to your room at $16.99. What a despicable and devious ploy to sell stuff, especially  harsh on parents with young kids. Should be banned.

Up at the crack of sparrows and drive down to the Old Faithful Lodge for Breakfast:

Good

A very reasonable all you can eat breakfast in great surroundings with a good choice.

Bad

DSC04496

Having to wait for a table when the restaurants half full. Typical American approach to service. “Oh we like to make sure their’s enough staff to serve you promptly”. Why then did we have to wait for our server?

Lovely hotel with oodles of charm and character. What a pity we couldn’t have stayed here. Probably have to book years in advance.

We were going to do some walks around the Old Faithful area, but by the time we’d had shopped for enough trivia to incur excess baggage charges, we decided to set off for the 6 hour drive home. Fortunately the weather by now was pleasant, after a few more photo opportunity stops as we drove through Grand Tetons, we had a pleasant and scenic drive back to PC. Then it’s straight to the supermarket for a giant weekly shop while we have  DSC04529the advantage of a car. For me it’s a trip to Chubasco’s for a take away smothered burrito and spicy sauces so hot me arse thinks it’s passing a flaming fireball the next day.

Whilst we loved Yellowstone and only wished we had more time there I have to say that in their eagerness to protect the environment etc., it seems their brains have clogged up, all common sense and enterprise has sunk in the hot mud springs. Mediocrity has seized their troubled minds. Nothing matters. Choice in oh so may ways is limited and lacks imagination. Just because there’s so many backpackers and campers, doesn’t mean that everyone wants to make do. No management. It’s as if the place is run by the French. No one gives a dam.

20140610 – Zip Lines, Roller Coaster rides, Mountain Biking and Hiking

Tuesday – hot and sunny.

Quicklook Roundvalley

I’m up and out to Round Valley for a mountain bike ride. A bit like a skiing holiday this.

First mountain bike ride without the need for a 2 gallon jar of Swarfega. Gears fixed, whatever happened to proper gears like Sturney Archer – probably they worked and too simple.

70F at 09:00 and the suns beaming down. I feel like a member of the foreign legion in the Sahara. Sadly there’s no lifts or coffee shops. My lungs are ready to burst, the sweats dripping down and my hearts about to do a great impression of an islamic martyr as he starts his journey in search of paradise. And these are only the green and blue trails. Then my exhaustion is pales into insignificance as a mountain bluebird crosses my path and poses on a branch, saying look at me. Look at my gorgeous blue colours. Then I spy a yellow headed blackbird.

Skiing is so much easier.

IMG 3933

What an awesome start to the day.

After lunch we both take a bike ride down the farm trails to Kimble Junction. More awesome views from this bike path. And just look at the design simplicity and style of that fence.

Coffee at Starbucks. Of course we visit to a few shops. Wendy doesn’t fancy the ride all the way back up hill, so we catch the bus. I do the gallant thing and accompany her. Yes, you can take your bikes on the FREE bus. They have proper bike racks at the front and even let you take them inside.

Wednesday – hot and sunny.

DSC04019

Today both of us aim to do a hike up Jenni’s trail. That way we can tell guests what it’s like. It’s about 90 minutes to the top of the zip lines, where we stop for lunch. Well an energy bar for Wendy and some water for me. Wot no Starbucks. Then it’s about a further 90 minutes to the top of Payday lift. Mind you we did get a tad lost.

Half way up we come across a giant mound of snow blocking the trail. Who said there’s no snow up here? Just need to pop back home and get them skis. Sadly it’s like a dirty arthritic slush puppy rather than the normal champagne powder.

Well done Wendy, you made it without too many whinges.

Catch the Payday lift back down. 30 minutes, thank the FSM it doesn’t go these speeds in winter, we’d DSC04057only get two runs a day in.

Hal and Randy come round in the evening for dinner. A great evening putting the World to rights.

Thursday – hot and sunny, with a short sharp shower in the afternoon.

Wendy’s volunteering at the hospital.

I do my MTB loop around Round Valley. Getting slightly faster but still have to walk up a bit of Cammis. Mind as a 12 year old sage, who was also walking up, wisely pointed out “there’s no shame in walking up hill”.

Another great 12 mile MTB ride. Now for coffee / lunch with Wendy in the hospital restaurant.

DSC04038

Take the Facebook English GCSE test. Amazed to get a B grade with 10/15. Not bad for someone who scraped though with just a pass in GCE (yes the proper exam) English. But, I still wish, I knew, where the, commas go.

Yes, that’s right, we’re eating hospital food. It’s delicious, unlike the tortured veg, mash and jelly slopped out at home.

Friday – hot and sunny, again.

Up and out on the bus to Silver Lake to hike (so much more manly than walk) the Mid Mountain trail to Park City.

Halfway along we stop off at the Montage. Sit on their deck having a coffee and iced tea (mind you we need 2nd mortgage to pay for it – great way to fritter away our kids inheritance), whilst being serenaded with live music – Bob Dylan style again.

Then it’s back to the hike. Mid Mountains a great trail. I could just about do this on my MTB, although there are some scary drop offs, so will wait until fitness and technique are improved in Round Vally.

IMG 3952

As Mid Mountains name implies, it more or less follows the contours half way up the mountain. Some awesome views, in and out the Aspens, and not too strenuous. Wendy makes the 9 miles with ease. Mind you there’s another 15 mile more of this trail down to the Canyons. Save that for another day.

Catch the Town lift down into Park City and then walk down to the supermarket for some supplies. As we’re car less – yes, very un American, I know – we have to do incremental shopping each time we pass the supermarket.

Saturday – cold and sunny.

Up early to catch the bus to PCMR. It Mountain Host volunteering day yet again. It’s quite cold (maximum 50F) so were in our jackets today and as luck would IMG 3962 ave it we’re dished out some long trousers to go with our uniform. Most welcome a day in shorts would have been freezing.

I get to test out the zip line again. That cold, my contact lenses nearly float away in the torrent of tears from the cold wind at 50 MPH. Certainly not a recommended ride for a cold day.

Quite enjoy it and our testing of rides on Monday, along with the hikes came in really handy when talking to guest and answering their questions.

Then in the evening it’s pleasant evening in with a Smoking Loon bottle of Merlot. Sadly my will power is not what it should be and had to finish the bottle. I blame it on World Cup Football blighting our TV screens and programming like a plague of locusts.

20140603 – Living The Dream – Part 2

Tuesday – grey weather.

IMG 3878

Up at the crack of sparrows to go to the airport. Stuart, our Home Exchange guest has kindly volunteered to take us. He only arrived at our place yesterday and we had a lovely evening meal with him, Lee and Jill. Always great to meet our guests. Got on really well, as usual it’s surprising how much us Home Exchangers have in common.

Flight was pretty good. Airports were they usual tedious, inconvenience and still never miss an opportunity to inflict as much misery as possible, I’d rather jump barefoot off a 6-foot step ladder into a 5 gallon bucket full of hedgehogs than go through an airport. Must say in mitigation Atlanta immigration was quickest we’ve ever been, despite two wide body flights having landed within 20 minutes of each other. Trust the French to get their first.

They now have a new system of self help screens that scan passport, take your photo and take finger prints. To supposedly speed things up. But you still have the ridiculous situation where you take your slip of paper to a customs officer who proceeds to stamp, stamp, stamp like a 2 year oldIMG 0807 with his first hammer. In Wendy’s case she had to do her finger prints again. But it was quicker.

Lounge at Atlanta International terminal was much better than the usual one. So there I am sat in me hiking boots relaxing, when I suddenly notice the sole of my boots hanging off like some tramp who’s just found them in a dustbin.

Real song and dance getting an isle seat for Wendy. Too long and tedious to relate here. Suffice it to say that Delta now have the “Golden Triangle Award for Sloppy Shoulders 2014”. More jobs worths than TSA employees at their daily lets screw with the passengers. Finally get it sorted at the gate. Done in 20 seconds. No problem.

Hertz screw up. Go to my designated slot, which is much too far for a Presidents Circle Member to walk. Giant SUV in there and not a small economy. Car stink like they’ve just finished milking a cow and the milks gone off. Too weary to change it, will swop it tomorrow in PC. Stopped at the exit. IMG 3885“You’ve got the wrong car”. “No I haven’t it was in my slot with my name lit up alongside it”.

Have to swap cars. By now the boiling blood is spluttering over the pavement. As compensation, to stem the rant, they offer me a car of my choice. End up with a nice new Kia Sorrento SUV.

Sad to say just lately Hertz seem to provide screw ups as a standard enhanced service level.

Arrive “home” about 22:30, nearly 24 hours door to door.

No more airports, TSA or terrahertz scanners for 3 months. Good to be back.

Wednesday – blue skies, sun and warm.

Wake up to blue skies and green mountains. No snow, apart from some very small pocket of champagne powder that has now aged with the sun to a crinkly, murky slush puppy. It’s sad to se a grown man cry!

House is all neat and tidy and welcoming. Just like arriving home.

Just look at those awesome mountains and views. Meanwhile I can get really excited about the simplicity of this fence. No nails needed.

Lazy morning sorting things out, unpacking etc.

IMG 3880

Have a leisurely lunch round at Carols, on the patio of course. Need to get used to this out door living. Great to see her and Angela again.

After lunch Wendy gets her fix as she does her weekly shop, while I check out Starbucks to make sure they’re still functioning properly. They’re still as dodgy and two faced as Janus, with the brass nerve to expect me to pay taxes though. Never mind the EU’s got them in their bureaucratic sights.

Outside the local supermarket is this piano. It works. It’s in tune. It’s not chained down. People just sit down and bash out the odd tune.

I pondered how long this would last in Blackburn? How long before the scrots bashed it? Graffitti? Steal it? Trash it? Use it for firewood? Take your pick.

Thursday – blue skies, sun and warm.

DSC03962

Leisurely morning, again. Go and buy some hiking boots to replace my tramps specials.

Then it’s down to Salt Lake city for  Costco and an all American Mall to get some sunglasses.

Early evening I go up to the National Ability Centre for an orientation session and tour of the facilities. I sign up as a volunteer for archery. Would like to do the water skiing one if training and transport can be arranged.

This Aspen tree is on the side of our deck. It’s awesome to just watch the leaves shimmer in the sunlight on a windy day. Sadly the camera doesn’t capture it’s true glory.

Friday – blue skies, sun and warm.

Up to the Mountain Plaza for our uniforms and Mountain Host training. Todd get’s us kitted out and gives us some basic training ready for our debut as rookie mountain hosts. Takes most of the day.

We both have to do one day a week as volunteers. Working together on Saturday, “thats nice”! WeIMG 3890 get a free season pass which cover summer and winter – hooray. Also get to go on all the rides for free and discounts in all the PCMR shops and restaurants.

Saturday – blue skies, sun and hot.

Day 1 as a  Mountain Host. Up early, don our new uniforms. Not forgetting our all important name badges and a great forage cap. Then the two rookies are let loose on an unsuspecting public.  No one warned me that I had to smile and be nice to people. Wendy’s quite comfortable with all this meeting and greeting, smiling and being nice to people. I’m sure that readers that know me, will be amazed to learn, that this is bit of a culture shock for Victor. Will I survive? Will I enjoy it? Will the customers cope? 7 hours of it.

A culture shock for me, I feel as if my lips have been stapled back to expose a permanent smile, like a braying donkey – painful, terrifying prospect.

I survived. Even the poor unsuspecting public survived and so far not a single complaint.

But it does have it’s compensations for just 1 day a week. Annual ski pass. Summer pass for mountain biking, hiking and zip lines etc. Plenty of sunshine. Live Bob Dylan music from a guy who was more personable that the real thing. And of course a free uniform.

Have a nice day!

Start on the plaza at 10:00 after morning briefing and work through to 16:30 with an hour for lunch. It’s quite busy all day. I actually enjoy it. None of it’s rocket science and we’re both soon into the swing of it. By 16:30 my smile been riveted in place and my jaw aches.

Overall a good day and nice to chat to so many friendly Americans. Yes, I think I can cope with this.

Sunday – blue skies, sun and hot.

IMG 3897

After 5 hectic days; travelling; lunch and dinner with friends; shopping; training; mountain host volunteering; we’re finally car less.

Finally get out early to try some mountain biking. Park City was the first area to win an International Mountain Biking Association Gold Level award. Stick to the green / easy trails. Hard work. Think a better idea is up on lift, ride down. Skiing is so much easier and you don’t have greasy chains to contend with.

Blue skies; awesome mountain scenery; topped off with 8 different species of birds, including the magnificent, ginormous, vociferous Sandhill Crane; squirrels; chipmunks; but alas no sign of the coyotes. What a great start to the day.

Sunday afternoon at the Silly Market in Park City. Got off lightly just a coffe and drink. The credit card lives to hide in the dark, cobwebbed, depths of my wallet yet another day. We bump into Sylvia and Tomoku, Wendy’s fellow volunteers at the hospital.

Well it looks like we’re almost certain to qualify for American citizenship as we’ve just barbecued burgers on our all American gas barbecue on the deck and dined out in the sun.

What can be more American than that. Not forgetting that we had Apple pie last Monday and enough calories in the form of cheesecake and death by chocolate to ensure we waddled home from Hal and Carols.

No doubt the Green Cards will be winging their way through our letter box as we speak.

Monday – blue skies, sun and hot..

IMG 3920

Decide to spend a day on the mountain trying out all the rides so that we’re better informed when talking to guests.

Catch the lift up for the Zip line. Wendy’s very nervous, but goes through with it. The longest in Utah. All over with after a 50MPH, 1 minute ride over the tree tops. Great. Then we try the Mountain coaster. A thrilling roller coaster toboggan ride down the mountain. Really enjoyable. Try the Flying Eagle where we sit side by side and do a short zip line ride up and then down. OK but wouldn’t want to pay for it. Finally Catch the lift up and try the mountain slide down. Enjoyable, I think Wendy must have worn her brakes out as she finally arrives minutes later, nearly had a whip lash case with the traffic jam she created.

An epic day, just being kids. All free to volunteer mountain hosts, including pictures.

Sorry no time for rants. Victors just too busy. Perhaps normal service and comments on the religion of peace and all the craziness in the World will be resumed next time.

20140430 – Time To Taunt The French; Oradour sur Glen; Poy Du Fou

Wednesday – dry and sunny.

IMG 3130

Yes, Victors back with more tales of rank stupidity; rants and a record of our travels for the aged. When you can’t remember what you

Victor’s Law of Female Timeliness – the time to get ready always expands to fill the time available to your departure deadline.

Has anyone noticed how women somehow always manage to fill the time available. Even if you get up hours ahead of time, with car loaded and everything done, they can manage to fill the time, vacuuming, dusting, moving furniture, you name it, and be ready to walk out the door just 1 nano-second before the agreed departure time. And that’s on a good day, usually it’s at least 15 minutes late!

Hells bells and set fire to it, depleted. Me wines nearly all gone. Must be evaporation! Time IMG 1113 to go taunt the French over Agincourt. Who knows I may even help their precious, overrated, subsidy sapping wine industry out by helping drain their wine lake and bring a small wine pond home. Actually considering my taxes have helped subsidise this wine lake you’d think as an EU citizen, even if a somewhat reluctant one, I’d get a discount.

Set off for the long drive to Portsmouth. As usual more road works – well bollards and 40MPH limits, but seeing anyone working was rarer than rocking horse dung. What’s all this “Smart Motorway” work? Is it a way of getting rid of 2 million miles of purple trunking that someone has been conned into buying or is it just more signs on gantries ever 4 feet to tell us that there’s road work or a traffic jam. What the hell are they putting in this lurid coloured trunking. Could it be fibre optic cables; rats; or raw sewage?

Arrive at Portsmouth early so have a mooch around and an overpriced afternoon tea at Gunwarf Quays Marina. Watching the boats go by and some burks, sorry dam predictive text burkas, trying to drink coffee without exposing or scalding themselves. Pity they didn’t have spaghetti Bolognese, now that would have been hilarious. Pots for rags, as they say.

IMG 3145

Customs decide to pull us in, want to have a look in my boot. I explain to them they’re wasting their time as it’s the size of a womans handbag, no room for explosives, flares, weapons or evan a pen knife. Yes, that’s right they’re looking for pen knifes. Since when has it been illegal to carry a pen knife. Before you can say “strike terror into the hearts of the unbelievers” they’ll be banning string – can be used as a garrotte – and sixpence – can choke on it. What will innocent and prepared boy scouts do?

Wendy gets her annual cruise after all. An overnight cruise Portsmouth to St Malo. Spare no expense this year.

Wot no chocolate on the pillow; no cabin steward; no balcony. Oh how I’ve been deceived.

Just had our safety briefing. In the event of a critical situation the captain will give his orders – “Follow me”.

Thursday – grey and rainy.

The countries closed, worst than Wales on a wet Sunday in August. We’re in Airvault in the Loire IMG 3133 alley for the next two weeks. Hopefully the country may open sometime during our stay. Wendy’s dying to get to E Leclerc and Lidl. Looks like it’s fish and chip for tea then as the campsite Bistro is the only sign of sentient life for hundreds of miles around. Trust a Scotsmen to exploit an opportunity, while the French are all sat on their butts watching the economy go down the pan. Thank the FSM for good old GB enterprise – Hollande take note.

Friday – mixed sun, cloud and rain.

Lazy start then it’s off to Lidl and E Leclerc. Yes the countries managed to rouse itself from slumber and apathy.

Saturday – sun and cloud.

IMG 3136

Lazy day. Well actually worked all day on our trip to South East USA for October 2015. Emailed all potential home exchangers in the area. Worst than being at work.

We’re in Little Britain at Airvault until 12th. Looks like the camp border control standards are slipping and going the way of UK Border Controls. Can you believe it there are Frenchies on the site, never mind I’m sure UKIP will sort it.

Sunday – sun and cloud and warm.

Another lazy day processing all the responses from yesterdays mail shot. Inundated with offers. Get some virtual pins on google earth to start to make some semblance of order of it. Need a holiday after all this work. In the meantime Wendy’s got her feet sunburnt.

Monday – sunny and hot 25C.

Morning slaving away on the SE USA emails. Afternoon we break our of our slumber and go for a walk to the local Intermarche – yes France has finally opened.

Tuesday – sunny and warm

Another morning slaving away. Then we drive down to Coulon (green venice) for a pleasant walk and lunch. We pass on a gondola ride as Wendy didn’t bring her water wings.

2006 01 04

In the evening a bottle ofSt Emillion seems to get the better of me. Stand no messing as I quaff it all down – no doubt that Hollande geezer will be awarding me the Order of Agricultural Merit or better still the Legion of Honour Medal for services to the French wine industry.

Oh well it looks like Pizza Express is off me list. Another Company helping islam on the way to the
caliphate / world domination. Mind you not going to Pizza Express will be no loss.
Black bin liners and beards for everyone – smell the coffee before it’s too late. Meanwhile I must stop reading that blood boiler Daily Mail. Don’t I just love the PC stupidity that’s rife in the UK. Within 24 hours we have; Halal in some Subways; Halal in all Pizza Express; bacon and ham abandoned in some Subways; Jeremy Clarkson being pilloried for racist remarks. Thank the FSM I’m not there.

IMG 0791

It’s goodbye Subway. Looks like their brains have dropped out. I’m not supporting any Company that is helping undermine my society and introduce Sharia by the back door. Halal meat is cruelly slaughtered. Surely it’s not Halal if pre-stunned. Why not go Kosher? Why not ban all meats to not offend veggies? I assume you’ll be putting up large signs in the Halal stores warning customer that they are now entering Halal / Sharia zone. Would my wife be expected to walk 3 feet behind me with a black bin liner on? It’s enough to make anyone join the EDL or BNP.

Then people ask why we spend so much time away. Can you blame us. The further I’m away from the loony, do gooder, liberal, PC numpties that are screwing my country the better. At least at a distance it all does’t seem so bad. I’ve just one target left in life now – 8 months away.

Wednesday – Mixed sun, cloud and rain.

Lazy day around the caravan. Rain showers drive Wendy nuts as she tries to dry the washing. SE IMG 3160USA planning going well. Narrowed down to 6 locations. Some amazing places on offer to us.

After all this work organising and planning I’m in desperate need of a holiday or at least some alcohol.

Life can be tough, especially when you screw up. Opened a tasty bottle of St Emilion and then I realised we’re away tomorrow – that’s another story to be revealed. Anyway back to my bottle of St E that I now have to finish off tonight, otherwise it will oxidise, go off and that would be a sin

Following the decision by Subway to stop selling Ham and Bacon to avoid offending muslims. B&Q have decided to stop selling wood and nails to avoid offending Christians.

Thursday – sun and cloud.

IMG 3178

An interesting and disturbing day. Visited Oradour Sur Glen. The French martyr village where 640 innocent French men, women and children were machine gunned and burnt to death in a reprisal by the Waffen SS in 1944. The village and ALL it’s inhabitants were annihilated.

A stark reminder of a bad past, and lest we think it was just something unique in the German psyche, don’t kid yourselves it could so easily happen again.

Followed up by a lovely, long and leisurely French lunch with old friends deep in the French countryside. Good to catch up after so many years and put the World to rights in such a short space of time.

Friday – sun and cloud.

Great but exhausting day out at Poy du Fou. Chariot racing, feeding Christians to lions, jousting, IMG 3325 iking rape and pillage. Good clean French family entertainment. A great day out with some spectacular shows and entertainment.

This picture of the colosseum is just what I’ve been raving on about. We need one in Blackburn. A Colosseum, complete with lions. Just think every Saturday afternoon we could feed some PC loony liberal or common senseless web site designer to the lions. Provide free entertainment, eliminate any future cock ups and stop them polluting the gene pool.
I’ve already 23 candidates on my list.

Stay over night at an excellent hotel n Les Herbiers – Maison Marie Barrault. The most friendly, helpful owners we’ve ever encountered. I IMG 3293 as beginning to wonder whether I was still in France. Hotel is modern, clean, immaculate with real funky rooms. Such a change from staying at boring chain hotels. Well equipped with quality fittings. Great attention to detail and everything you could want. Good nights sleep. Breakfast was awesome. Delicious homemade cake on the menu and Brioche. Will definitely stay there again and recommend to anyone.

Saturday – rain and clouds.

After an excellent breakfast we decide to have a drive down the coast and visit Ollone-sur-mer. Major screw up. Should really have checked the weather forecast. Certainly a place to visit next time we go to Poy du Fou as the port area looks very pleasant. Pity about the rain. At least I manage to help drain the EU wine lake by 39 bottles. Just about manage to get them into the boot, it’s full of Wendy’s Armagnac.

IMG 3398

Just watched Question Time. When will David Dimbleby get a grip and chair the panel rather than allowing a free for all of he who shouts loudest? Have to say the more I see of that Farage geezer the more I like the cut of his gib compared to the rest of the gutless weasels. Perhaps time for a EU protest vote in favour of UKIP.

Sunday – mixed sort of day. Sun, clouds and warm.

Laze around the caravan.

Monday – sun and clouds but at least it’s warm.

Start packing up ready for departure. Lazy day, at least for me. Wendy’s in her element, if it’s stands still polish or dust it.

Tuesday – warm and sunny.

IMG 3600

Leisurely pack up the caravan and get off about 11:00. £.5 hour drive up to St Malo. So much better than having to suffer the 7 hour drive to Calais.

Have a shuffle around St Malo and a coffee. What is it with the younger generation with rings in their nose, looks like snot dribbling down – revolting.

Finally get on board our cruise ship for Wendy’s 2nd cruise of the year. Avoid the self service restaurant, no butties so decide to go for the Buffet Dinner served in the best restaurant on board. For £25 it’s excellent. The starter buffet would have done us, then there’s a main course, followed by a lavish help yourself cheese board and tempting choice of help yourself sweets – calorie fiesta.

Wednesday – hot and sunny.

Land in Portsmouth. First stop MacDonalds for an egg MacMuffin. Proper food.

IMG 3470

Are you sure this is England? The suns shining and it’s warm.

No just had it confirmed. MacDonalds can’t hand me a cup of coffee without the lid on. Health & Safety

Yes, it must be England.

Leisurely drive up the coast to Clive’s home in Eastbourne.

Call in at Chichester. Lovely little market town with lots of individual shops, none of your homogenised shopping here. Although there are some non PC shops – see photo – just love it.

IMG 3256

Then call in at Brighton. Stroll around the Lanes. Like a slightly up market Blackpool. Best avoided in future. Finally managed to find our car with just a few minutes to spare before being charge £12 for parking instead of an outrageous £5 for 2 hours.

Get to Clive’s for 16:00. Helen’s cooked some tasty home made scones with strawberry jam and cream. Followed by a lovely dinner in the evening and then we get to watch “The Railway Man”. Stay overnight in their 1920’s mansion, complete with servants quarters and spectacular gardens. Great to see Clive again and meet Helen. Good company, good food and good hospitality.

Thursday – hot and sunny again.

After breakfast Clive takes us for a pleasant drive around Eastbourne, Beachy Head and the IMG 3218 arina. Coffee at the marina in a lovely civilised setting. What a really pleasant end to the holiday.

Then its the 5 hour drive home. Only 4 sets of road works. Oh so boring.

This happened to an Englishman in France who was totally drunk. The French policeman stops his car and asks the gentleman if he has been drinking. With great difficulty, the Englishman admits that he has been drinking all day, that his daughter got married in the morning to a French man, and that he drank champagne and a few bottles of wine at the reception and quite a few glasses of single malt there after.Quite upset, the policeman proceeds to alcotest (breath test) him and asks the Englishman if he knows under French Law why he has just been arrested. The Englishman answers With humour: No, but do you know that this is a British car and my wife is the driver… on the other side?

20140330 – Last week of skiing; Wedding Anniversary; Fireside Dining at Empire Lodge; Book for next ski season.

Sunday – starts the day raining down here. Quite rare here so far this year, obviously preparing us for our return home.

IMG 2990

Mothers day – Wendy gets 3 cards, a bottle of Pimms and an Amazon voucher.

The British Islamic Association has said there is no longer room for extremists within their mosques.

Although a waiting list has been set up.

Monday – a blue bird day.

At 9:00 on Eagle lift with 10″ fresh powder and blue skies – thank Chione. Can’t think of anywhere better to be. Wendy’s given it a pass with so much powder, probably a good job as it’s quite hard work.

Great snow. 13 awesome runs in, a totally bodacious day. Totally cream crackered by lunch time. Well worth getting up at the crack of sparrows.

IMG 0756

Transport, energy and broadband are our lifeblood, yet we are hopeless at improving them:Is there anything politicians love more than being photographed wearing yellow safety jackets? Britain’s roads, railways and airports are quietly crumbling. Without fundamental reform, we will continue to slip behind.

According to the World Bank, Britain’s infrastructure is the 28th best in the world. That puts us marginally ahead of Namibia, at 32nd. And things aren’t getting much better.

Look at HS2 all that money on a marginal improvement. Has it never occurred to THEM that if we improve our broadband infrastructure we can help cut down the need for travel. How many times in my previous incarnation did I have to go all the way down to London for a 1 hour meeting that could have been done over the Internet?

Tuesday – snowing on and off all day and thankfully below freezing.

IMG 3038

Picture shows a familiar feeling today.

Another 6″ powder according to the powder alert. Seems more like 12” (unlike the marketing people who normally speak with forked tongue, to under estimate), hence my wipeout – well at least that’s my excuse. I really think I need some lessons in how to deal with this much snow.

It’s a war zone out there. Bodies everywhere, trying to find their skis, trying to excavate themselves and even walking down. Keeping the hospital busy according to Wendy.

Totally rad day, thank Chione.

After lunch we look after Angela for the afternoon. Go round to have a look at a condo rental IMG 3049 or next year. Angela gives the property manager a thorough and hilarious interrogation – 5 years old going on 40. It’s near Prospector Square and although very handy for the bus it just didn’t feel like home. We pass on it. Can you believe the property manager who was showing us round told Wendy B2 when it was B5, and didn’t even have his mobile with him!

Then we’re off to the park following Angela’s directions. The parks here are so imaginative. Almost makes you want to be 5 again.

Angela’s had her playtime so then it’s adults playtime at Starbucks.

By now the suns gone and it’s blowing  snow storm. Followed by a bus ride home to the iPad of course. Bus is quite a novelty for Angela, hence we get a running commentary.

IMG 3063

iPad games and Disney cartoons keep Angela engrossed.

Lovely afternoon. Really enjoyed having her. She’s so well behaved and polite. More rattle than a can of marbles but so amusing. Never a dull moment.

Here they go again:

The Sultan of Brunei, one of the world’s wealthiest rulers and a close ally of Britain, will this week oversee his country’s transition to a system of Islamic law with punishments that include flogging, the dismemberment of limbs and stoning to death.

The absolute monarch declared last year that he wanted to introduce a full sharia system in his oil-rich nation and warned critics who took to social media sites to complain that they could be prosecuted using the new laws. The decision to introduce sharia and reintroduce the death penalty has been condemned by NGOs and legal rights campaigners, who say the new rules will breach international laws.

It has also triggered unsurprising alarm among some of Brunei’s non-Muslim communities, who will also be subject to some of the rulings. The development could put pressure on Britain to rethink its close relationship with Brunei.Offences include insulting the Prophet Mohamed, drinking alcohol, getting pregnant outside of marriage and sodomy. The latter will be punishable by stoning.

Another place off my holiday list.

IMG 3066

Wednesday – very cold, clouds and snow.

Another Powder alert for 8″ of the fluffy stuff.  Makes it another crack of sparrows start. On Eagle for 09:00 with all the other OSD (obsessive skiing disorder) suffers.

Badly underestimated how cold it would be. Only have my lightweight jacket and ski pants on, desperately need more layers today. Never been so cold.

The ice on Temptation and King Kong are an early morning eye opener, gets your teeth rattling. Thankfully the rest of the runs are great snow.

IMG 1088

Great mornings skiing. Totally cream crackered by lunch. Then I have a 3 hour NAC volunteers session. The instructor I’m supporting is speedy gonzales, faster than a cat can lick its ass.

Just about survive the 3 hours. I do so miss me ski poles when I’m volunteering. Exhausted. Wendy thinks I’m out here enjoying me sen.

Now I’m probably well known for my views on snowboarders – ban them. It’s simple. But today the mountain was truly angry, with a raging cold blizzard, and there’s a snowboarder in jeans. Thats dopey enough but there’s more, he had giant rips in the legs and was scooting along playing his imaginary guitar. Obviously some institution is probably out desperately looking for him.

Home by 16:30 after a gruelling 7.5 hour day – sounds like work.

Eating seven portions of fruit and vegetables a day cuts the risk of early death by 42 per cent, according to a study that suggests aiming for “five a day” may not be enough.Vegetables appeared to be markedly healthier than fruit, said researchers, who urged a shift towards Australian advice to eat five daily portions of vegetables plus two of fruit.

However, other experts said the research could not prove that extra vegetables were life-IMG 2619saving because people who reported eating the most were more likely to be healthier in other ways. They warned that changing NHS guidance risked disheartening people struggling to eat five a day, as well as giving the impression that scientists do not know what they are talking about.

Why would anyone ever come to that conclusion! I’m sticking to my high fruit diet. Plenty of grapes every day. Well red wine made from them.

Thursday – cloudy and cold.

It’s our wedding anniversary, 43 years. As usual we don’t bother with cards or presents, although Wendy puts a piece on Facebook – saves on a card:

Celebrating 43years of marriage to my Husband Tony. We have shared Good Times and Bad..Happy and Sad. We have seen lots of Changes in our lifetime together but …..the one thing that has never changed is my love for you. Happy Anniversary Tony. All my love as always Wendy xx

To celebrate 43 years of marriage I go skiing for a change. Wendy does her Florence Nightingale stint at the hospital. Snows if fine fettle. Have another good morning skiing.

IMG 3067

In the evening we go out for a meal to celebrate our 43 year. Fireside dining, with Hal and Carol and of course Angela, at the Empire Lodge. A fabulous all you can eat meal, with great company and Angela’s just so well behaved. Menu:

About time:

David Cameron has ordered an urgent investigation into the Muslim Brotherhood amid fears that the Islamist organisation is planning extremist activities from Britain. The review will include an assessment by MI6, the foreign intelligence service, of claims that the group was behind the murder of three tourists on a bus in Egypt in February and a spate of other recent attacks.

Friday – sun and cloud.

A great mornings skiing.

IMG 0847

Wendy’s come up with an idea for next year. “Why don’t we get a place here for January through March next year.” Having survived as a dutiful husband for 43 years I suppose I could be persuaded to go along with it, even if it does mean I’ll have to put up with 3 months skiing Anything for a quiet life.

We’ve looked at several places and in the afternoon we look at a 3rd place. It’s a great 3 bedroom house, fully kitted out with everything including hot tub, on the Racquet Club, same location as this place. Ideal location. Best of all its a steal for round here. Just booked it.

IMG 2162

Vindicated at last:

Vegetarians are ‘less healthy’ and have a poorer quality of life than meat-eaters

Vegetarians visit their doctors more often and are more prone to allergies

They also have ‘a 50% increased risk of both heart attacks and cancer’

They are also more likely to develop depression and anxiety disorders

But vegetarians tend to be more active and less likely to drink and smoke.

Perhaps now Wendy will stop trying to shorten my lifespan by force feeding me vegetables (7 a day recommended now don’t forget) every Sunday.

How to improve memory:

IMG 0765

Coffee, I drink plenty; Blueberries, I have them for breakfast every day; sniff Rosemary – sadly I don’t know anyone by that name; Yoga and meditation, I keep trying.

And I still struggle remembering what I had for breakfast!

Saturday – cloudy with a bit of snow forecast.

Early start for a last minute ski. Snows still in fine fettle. Good last morning skiing while Wendy goes to pick up the hire car. It’s a top of the range Kia Optima. Ideal, always wanted to try one.

Then that’s it for another year. I’m not just sad. I’m desolated, sadder than a jihadist bomber IMG 2063 ho arrives in paradise to find they’ve run out of virgins. But hopefully I will get to be SAD (Ski Another Day) next year. Maybe I can get treatment for OSD (Obsessive Skiing Disorder) on the NHS. Free trips to Chill Factor to help with the withdrawal symptoms would help.

Then in the afternoon we pack. Our Atalanta / Manchester flights been moved 2 hours earlier, it now departs before we arrive in Atlanta. Not recommended. Our flight from Salt Lake to Atlanta is now 11:00 so it’s an early start tomorrow.

Get a life:

Plans to beach a giant inflatable whale beside the Thames in London for a re-enactment of the story of Jonah have been refused because it would be too religious .

Now I know Americans are a tad prone to extreme survivalist, back woodsmen and the preservation of all 2nd amendment virtues, but this from Costco shows how serious it is:

Well a year on that should help solve the Nations obesity problems.

Wendy’s knitted an Easter Bunny.

This sounds like a threat to me:

IMG 0773

Banning the Muslim Brotherhood will leave Britain at greater risk of terrorist attacks, the group’s most senior leader in the UK said yesterday. Speaking for the first time since David Cameron announced an investigation into the organisation’s alleged links to violent extremism, Ibrahim Mounir said that it risked alienating moderate Muslims.

“If this [ban] happened, this would make a lot of people in Muslim communities think that [peaceful] Muslim Brotherhood values . . . didn’t work and now they are designated a terrorist group, which would make the doors open for all options,” he said. Asked if he meant open to violence, he replied: “Any possibility.”

Just ban them for threatening us.

20140325 – Wot no Tweenies; Wendy’s skiing parallel; Wendy ponders a season pass for next year!

Tuesday – blue bird day, 55F. Must be a blue bird day, Wendy’s skiing.

IMG 2963

Wot no Tweenies. Why is it so quiet? Why is it so tidy? Why is it 08:00 and not 06:00?

Oh that’s it Jaspers and the kids have gone home. Missing him already. And his parents too.

Lazy start to the day to allow the snow to soften up. No car, so it’s back to the bus. It really is a great service.

Get a few easy runs in and then stop for coffee at the Mid Mountain lodge. Snow is getting very slushy.

Up McKonkeys and the snow at the top is so much better. A few more runs and then we stop for lunch at the Snow Hut, my favourite watering hole. Resist the temptation to break the 2nd Commandment, so no beer.

IMG 2966

Then we take the long Home Run back down.

Wendy’s skiing seems to have really improved. I think she’s been having secret lessons. Parallel turns are coming together nicely. Impressed.

Home for afternoon tea and Carol picks up cot, baby gates, toys, baby seat and bedding she has kindly lent us. Really helped for baby Jasper – thanks to Hal and Carol.

Well I can understand why kids aren’t allowed smartphones in school.  Kurt and Fiona used to just sit there engrossed in their iPhone, not a peep out of them. Mind you after Tweenies playing Angry Birds must seem like the equivalent of Quantum Physics.

IMG 2981

Thought for the day:

“Everybody in this country should learn to program a computer, because it teaches you how to think.”— Steve Jobs.

Mind you given the state of software / web sites I do wonder where common sense went!

Now here’s a thought to bear in mind, from a prominent leader of the religion of peace:

“Radical Islam is a creation of people who do not believe in Islam. We don’t have radical Islam, we don’t have moderates, we don’t have extremists. Islam is one religion following the Koran and the Sunna”.

Wednesday – grey and some snow.

We’re getting plenty of birds now on our bird feeder. Each morning we get a Northern Flicker Woodpecker. Much more stimulating than the IMG 2990Tweenies.

Wendy’s volunteering at the hospital this afternoon.

Real lazy start to the day to allow the snow to soften up and hopefully take advantage of some new snow.

It’s still a tad icy from yesterdays melting, but at least it’s snowing and as a result there’s hardly anybody skiing. Have a few runs and then a coffee to give the snow chance to come down and improve the skiing. Sadly there’s only about an inch so it’s still like a skating rink on some of the IMG 0756 runs. A couple more runs and I chicken out and call it a day. Silver Queen, normally a double blue, has the distinction of being a 40 degree gradient ice rink – what joy. Need to stop halfway down to sharpen my edges.

Software Normal All F..ked Up – SNAFU Of The Day

Starbucks – try to register my Star Rewards from packets of coffee. Doesn’t work, goes round in every decreasing circles. Why am I green card when I log in? I thought I was Gold card. In fact iPhone  app says I’m gold. Why does it have to be so complicated? Time to ring them.

“Ah there’s a problem with logging stars on the web site”, she says. Of course “they’re working IMG 2991 n it!” She logs them for me. It appears that I’m a green card in the UK but Gold in the US. Something about needing a US address. Despite the fact that my app is in $. So much for being a Worldwide Company. She says “yes it’s confusing isn’t it”. It seems to me you need to have an advance degree in stupidity to comprehend it all. Ask her if Starbucks values and goals are “We have always believed Starbucks can – and should — have a positive impact on the communities we serve. One person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.”, perhaps they could start paying some tax in the UK. It’s lost on her.

Thursday – snowy and cold day.

Ski in the morning. It’s snowing thank Chione, after yesterday we really need it.

By lunch time I’m cream crackered but am volunteering at the NAC. With a 10 year old in a mono-ski. It’s just pouring down with snow but this youngster just keeps going for it down First Time. We have to chase after him. He has amazing balance and can ski down on his mono-ski in a bucket seat with no poles. Now wonder they call this the National ABILITY Centre. We get 9” of much needed snow.

IMG 2992

SNAFU of the Day

Tried to get an online pension estimate. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe that I get my state pension next year! The government site supposedly has one User ID and Password for ALL their services. Tried my Tax Id and Password. Not recognised. Tried my County Court access. Failed. Am I surprised. Try to set up a new one. Wants my National Insurance Number, Post code and Telephone to allocate me a Government site User ID. Doesn’t work. Told to contact the Help desk- now theirs an oxymoron if ever there was one. Speak to the usual un-empowered, jobs worth. Give them same info. They can’t answer why others don’t work but say they’ll clear my access so that I can try again. Still doesn’t work.

Ask the obvious question “Why do I need another unique ID when I already have one? It’sIMG 3002 called a National Insurance number”. If I want to complain I’ll have to write in. A sure fired way to stop complaints. Even if you bother to complain you just know it’s a complete waste of time.

Another example of the complete lack of thought or common sense. I bet an IT guy was involved in the need for yet another number. For Chione’s sake let’s think about the poor customer who pays your wages. He’s already got enough log ons, ID and passwords to fill 10 A4 notepads. Don’t they realise I can’t even remember what I had for breakfast. Where’s the retribution against such rank stupidity?

Unbelievable. Well no, I suppose sadly it’s just typical.

IMG 3006

Members of Newbury’s Muslim community have been left upset and angry by West Berkshire Council’s decision to allow a new supermarket to sell alcohol next door to Newbury Mosque, Pound Street. In January, the council’s licensing sub-committee granted the new Southern Co-operative store, due to open in the summer, a licence to serve alcohol. A small petition with just 58 signatures objected to the move.

While the Bangladesh Welfare Centre had no problems with the store being built, it ludicrously claimed that the sale of alcohol next to a place of worship would increase crime, antisocial behaviour and racial hatred. Of course no evidence was submitted and it is pretty clear that supermarkets are hardly crime hotspots for antisocial behaviour and racial hatred.

If anything trying to impose islamic laws on local non islamic communities is doing more to contribute to racial hatred than anything that could result from a Coop having a drinks section.

IMG 3012

The council said “It was not as if it was a licence for a pub where people could sit and drink next to the mosque, that would be different.”

Why would a pub be different? This is England and not yet under the barbaric control of sharia law. If the 58 signatures don’t like it then there’s an alternative – go live in a muslim country.

Friday – blue bird day.

Powder alert. 9” fresh powder yesterday – thank you Chione. Up at the crack of sparrows for first tracks. A real treat today as I get to ski Deer Valley today. Luxury and no snow boarders. In the lift line for 8:50. By 10:15 it’s coffee time, after 9 runs and 16 miles. Meet Wendy for lunch up at Empire, by which time I’ve cracked off 16 awesome runs and 32 miles. Can’t resist a couple of runs down rather than the bus, so it’s 18 runs, 36 miles and maximum speed of 44 MPH. Awesome skiing. Living the Dream.

Finally finish watching “The Newsroom” season 2. Pretty, pretty, pretty good but not as good as “The West Wing”. Really enjoyed those bits we stayed awake through. We’ve had a free trial of HBO for nearly 3 months and this is the only thing we’ve watched. Do not think I’ll be swelling Comcast’s coffers with an HBO subscription, even if it is only a few dollars – Netflix rules.

Some good news for freedom of information:

Not a good day then, it would seem, for The Times and the cause of greater openness in public affairs as it appeared to loose a case. However, the court then announced a remarkable judgment with wide ramifications. The much-vaunted Freedom of Information Act, said the court, and the European Convention, has no more power to force a public body to disclose facts that it would prefer to remain secret than does English common law. Such law, stated the court, has long held a presumption in favour of information being revealed in these circumstances rather than concealed.

The consequences of this Supreme Court ruling cannot be overstated. Never mind the strictures of Parliament or Strasbourg, the court is saying that time-honoured common law has long suggested the existence of a public right to access information about actions performed in its name. The authorities may seek to limit our knowledge of what they do and why they do it — but in doing so they emphatically do not have the law on their side. Thus what appeared to be a triumph for the forces of opacity turned out actually to be a victory for transparency.

Saturday – a blue bird day. 2” fresh snow.

IMG 0750

Diet going extremely well, with the assistance of red wine, now down to 13 Stone 4lb. Just 4 lb’s to go.

We ski with Hal and Angela. Hal has a free buddy pass for Wendy.

Angelas a little downhill racer these days. No fear. Wendy struggles to keep up with her. Give Angela another couple of years at this rate and even Hal and Carol will be struggling to keep up. Have a great morning skiing with a stop for coffee and cake for Angela.

Hal tries to tempt me to join him down Blue Slip (Black Diamond in the middle of Blue Slip bowl). It’ll have to be groomed better than that and I’ll probably need a few brandies.

Wendy’s tired out by the time we get down to the bottom. Not surprised given the number of turns she does. It really is so much more restful to go straight down!

Home for lunch. Then a walk down to the supermarket and liquor store – Wendy’s out of brandy again!

Angela comes round. I think it’s mainly the iPad she wants to see, not us. She wears the iPad games out and then resorts to Disney movies, courtesy of Netflix. Tweenies is much to babyish for her she says.

Wendy ponders whether a season pass might be good for next year. As an OAP it’s only $500. At window prices she only has to ski 5 days and it’s cheaper. At discount prices she needs to ski 8 days and its cheaper. So far she’s managed 5 days this year. However if you have a season pass then you don’t mind going up for a couple of runs, whereas $71 for a couple of runs can be off putting. Seems like a good idea, but hopefully she’ll get a free one if we get on the winter mountain host programme as promised.

On Wednesday, four snowboarder called Wasatch Equality dropped a federal lawsuit on the Little Cottonwood Canyon resort, challenging its longstanding skiers-only policy.

A lawyer for the snowboarders said that because of Alta Ski Area’s arrangement with the U.S. Forest Service, it must comply with the equal protection clause in the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Alta is one of only three, very sensible, ski resorts in the United States that does not allow snowboarding, and Alta is the only one of these resorts that is operated on public land controlled by the Forest Service.

The ban excludes a “particular class of individuals from use and enjoyment of public land based on irrational discrimination against snowboarders,”.

It pits those who stand sideways on a single “snowboard” against those who stand forward on “skis,” creating hostility and divisiveness, according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court.

Plaintiff Drew Hicken said there is no reason skiing and snowboarding can’t coexist. This guys probably never skied with snow boarders

“We feel that it is time for Alta to let go of outdated prejudices that perpetuate a skier versus snowboarder mentality and allow everyone, regardless of whether they are skiers or snowboarders, to share the mountain together,” he said.

An Alta spokeswoman said the resort wants to gather more information before commenting on the lawsuit.

One out-of-state skier coming off the mountain Wednesday said Alta is for skiers.

“It’s the only place left. Give it to ’em. Snowboarders go anywhere else you want to go, but leave Alta for the skiers,” Kevin Hurley said. “Where we live, we gotta deal with snowboarders, and we’d rather deal with skiers.”

Snowboarders have a reputation, deserved or not, for riding reckless and without regard for others on the mountain. Believe me it’s a deserved reputation.

Now a few tips for the judge when reviewing this case. See the 7 point code below and the reasons why snow boarders are incapable of complying with the various points.

Seven Points to Your Responsibility Code:

Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects. See 1, 2, 6 and 8.

People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them. See 1, 2, 6 and 8.

You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above. See 3.

Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others. See 4.

Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.

Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. See 6.

Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.

1 Snow boarders have as much idea of personnel space as the Japanese in rush hour boarding their metro. There can be a whole empty ski run and they’re attracted to skiers like moths to a light.
2 Snow boarder ski down sideways on and are therefore blind sided for 180 degrees to their left or right and hence can’t see people on their blind side.
3 Snow boarders suffer from regular bouts of sleeping sickness and take group siestas across the middle of the slopes, usually at the narrowest possible point or over a brow of a hill so that they can’t be seen.
4 Snow boarders can’t follow simple instructions, such as look behind you before setting off. Even instructors can be seen teaching this by example.
5 Snow boarders are ignorant knuckle draggers. Even if they run into you they just can’t be bothered to stop and apologise. Their feet are automatically attracted to seats on public transport.
6 Snow boarders can’t read. Even simple words like SLOW baffle them. Evidenced by their break skiers neck speed in slow zones, where signs are posted.
7 Snow boarders move too much snow down the mountain.
8 Snow boarders are reckless.

20140320 – Skiing with the kids; my star pupil; The Tweenies turn our brains to Jello

Thursday – blue bird day. Warm and sunny.

IMG 2767

Lazy start. Drop Wendy off at the hospital then I get to the slopes for 10:30.

Hello newbies boots. You’ve got some big boots to fill to compete with your predecessors.

Goodbye comfy old faithful’s. You’ve kept me safe, warm and comfortable for 20 years. You’ll be sadly missed but not forgotten.

Great days skiing. Manage to get 28 miles and 13 runs in. New boots are working a treat. They seem firm, positive and I feel confident in them. Pity I have to break my feet each morning to shoehorn into them – tighter than a bulls arse when the flies are about. However, they’ve passed the all important “lunch time test”. I keep them on, no messing with clips and buckles. You can’t see where you going in most lodges at lunch time as the steam rises from sweaty feet trying to escape the agony of their boots. Clips and buckles are played with for hours. Socks steam away as they’re hung out to dry and you have DSC03213 o be careful not to tread on bare feet. Skiers breathe an orgasmic sigh of relief as they escape the implements from the Spanish Inquisition. It’s like the aftermath of a medieval torture chamber.

Kurt and Fiona go shopping down at the Outlets Centre.

My law of maximum perversity, often known as sod’s law:

No matter where you want tot turn there will always be a snowboarder in the way.

Serial-Killer – Person with difficult-to-meet needs.

Shoplifter – Cost-of-Living Adjustment Specialist

More religious intolerance:

The BBC asked pop star Eliza Doolittle to drop a reference to Jesus when 2014 03 19 erforming a song on the radio. Doolittle was asked to re-word her love song Walking On Water for an appearance on the Radio 2 breakfast show, hosted by Chris Evans, because she refers to Jesus walking on water, according to the Mail on Sunday.

Her lyric refers to putting on a pair of trainers to run across the water to a yearned-for love. She told the Mail on Sunday that she had to change the lyrics from:
Sometimes I wish I was Jesus, I’d get my Air Max on and run across the sea for you.
to
Sometimes I wish it was easy to get my Air Max on and run across the sea for you.

IMG 2757

BBC bosses are facing justified accusations they were oversensitive over Doolittle’s religious reference.

Now the BBC claimed there had been a misunderstanding , and that the corporation would not request a singer alters their lyrics.

Friday – Another blue bird day.

Wendy and I are up at 06:30 minding and feeding Jasper, because his poor wee parents need a lie in. No stamina these modern parents. So it’s Tweenies at dawn. My brains going to jello. Jaspers so excited, he’s eating his hairbrush. He’s entranced by it, doesn’t seem to matter that he’s seen it 44.5 times before.

We’re off skiing. Need to get in the car park by 10’ish or else it’s likely to be full. IMG 2933We finally manage to get Kurt and Fiona dressed and ready for skiing. Worse than getting kids up and ready.

Spend the morning on First Time. Meet Hal, Carol and Angela, and of course Wendy with chariot and Jasper, for lunch at the Corner Cafe.

Carol and Angela take Fiona up Crescent and start the descent of Home Run. Fiona makes it all the way down Home Run. A great achievement after only 3 days skiing.

If builders built buildings the way programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilization. Weinberg’s Second Law.

Given the crap served up these days by so called programmers, sadly, I’m DSC03230 shamed to admit, in pleasant society, that I was a systems designer / programmer.

More stupidity and dhimmitude from the UK:

David Cameron criticised the Islamic Shakhsiyah Foundation during Prime Minister’s Questions in 2009 as a ‘front organisation’ for a radical Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir.” Hizb ut-Tahrir is an international Muslim organization that is banned in many countries and openly works for the imposition of Sharia. Yet “the Islamic Shakhsiyah Foundation is being awarded grants worth more than £70,000 a year.

IMG 2854

Pots for rags. What chuckleheads wasted our money on this? Heads should role for sheer stupidity. Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster that I’m not home most of the year.

Saturday – another blue bird day.

Wot no skiing for me.

Wendy and I take Jasper down to Monkey Mountain play centre, while the parentals lazed around. He has a grand old time, even though he was bait young. Wendy enjoyed the slide.

Then in the afternoon the kids went a bike ride while we entertained Jasper some more. All took a drive up to the Canyons for the concert and Smores, sadly no smores, but there was a magician. Bit of a disappointment really, very crowded.

DSC03243

Mexican takeaway for dinner – my favourite. But remind me not to bother with stodgy Tamales again.

Scotland wants independence. It’s just madness and will result in more bureaucracy and more self serving, power hungry politicians with their noses in as many troughs as possible – something we all need like a virulent dose of the pox. If they get it then we, England, should make sure we withdraw all assistance, currency etc. Next it’ll be Wales, then Cornwall and finally Rutland (has anyone heard of it).

More PC terms:

DSC03265

Sunday – another, too hot, blue bird day.

We’re up at 06:00 looking after Jasper so that the parentals can have a bit of a lie in. More Tweenies turning our brains to Jello.

I set off in the car, luxury, for an early morning ski. Manage to get 4 good runs in – a tad icy this early – before meeting Kurt and Fiona. After a quick run down First time Fiona’s chomping at the bit to get up Crescent ski lift and come down Home Run. She does great. Makes it all the way down, non stop, not a single fall and in perfect control. It all seems to have come together.

IMG 2946

Meet Wendy, Jasper and butties at Pay day for picnic lunch.

Get some family photos on the snow. Then Fiona’s off again up Crescent for another, even faster, run down Home Run. She’s done really well but is knackered by the end of the day. Never mind the jacuzzi and a beer / Pimms sorts all that.

Watch the last two episodes of the Following – pretty good. Can’t believe that there’s a 2nd and possibly even a 3rd season.

Now here’s a surprise:

British authorities enforcing political correctness have allowed Muslim paedophile DSC03267gangs to sexually abuse children with impunity for more than two decades, according to a comprehensive new study that examines the harrowing epidemic of child grooming in towns and cities across Britain.

“[T]he agencies responsible for child-protection have almost entirely failed in their job to protect vulnerable children. From a fear of being called ‘racist,’ police forces across the country have buried the evidence…. Political correctness would be used to make sure that people did not speak about this phenomenon.” — from Easy Meat: Multiculturalism, Islam and Child Sex Slavery

DSC03276

“[A] 2010 document by the Rotherham Safeguarding Children Board stated that, ‘great care will be taken in drafting…this report to ensure that its findings embrace Rotherham’s qualities of diversity. It is imperative that discussions of a wider cultural phenomenon are avoided.'” — from Easy Meat: Multiculturalism, Islam and Child Sex Slavery

When will we have the gonads to speak out without fear of being accused of racism (islam / muslims are not a race); islamaphobia (a made up word used by extremists. A phobia is an irrational fear, given islams track record on violence etc. it is perfectly rational to fear islam); or the new weapon of the extremists, multiculturalist, liberal, PC storm troopers to stifle free speech – blasphemy.

Monday – another blue bird day.

IMG 2953

Look after Jasper from 06:30 again. Parentals have a lie in. This time try for a bit of intellectual stimulation with Sesame Street, but Jasper’s having none of it, he craves the Tweenies for the 46.5th time and still gets as excited. Never mind tonight we get more mind numbing as we have a weeks worth of crap enders, the adult equivalent of Tweenies, to catch up with – joy.

Morning is last minute shopping and of course Wendy’s weekly fix at the supermarket.

DSC03257

Then we drop the kids off at the airport and say our goodbyes. Life will be so quiet and we’ll miss them and especially Jasper.

Drop the car off at hertz and have a pleasant walk home. The Traverse was a lovely car to drive and with 7 seats was just big enough. Now it’s back to walking and the bus. Much more healthy.

More evidence of the barbarism of that so called religion:

A new report on human rights in Afghanistan released by the U.S. State Department reveals that girls as young as six can be “married” away or betrothed and are the victims of frequent sexual abuse from older men, sometimes within their own families.

Although the Taliban have a reputation for religious conservatism, that IMG 1038 onservatism does nothing to protect women and girls from the sexual depredations of men. Women and girls are commonly victimized and those that speak out are likely to be blamed themselves, regardless of age differences.

The report reveals that girls as young as six can be “married” away or betrothed and are the victims of frequent sexual abuse from older men, sometimes within their own families….Afghan law requires that girls be 16 before they can marry and boys 18. Such laws are rarely respected and about 60 percent of all girls are forced to marry before 16.

IMG 2877

In 2013, incidents of rape also increased in Afghanistan. Most of the victims were children.

The Taliban argue that restricting child marriages is “un-Islamic.” In their culture, it is perfectly acceptable to marry children or to promise them in marriage. Traditionally a girl may be betrothed, but the marriages are supposed to be delayed until puberty. However, this is not always respected. Also, early onset of puberty can occur in some girls, sometimes as young as eight.

Wake up and smell the coffee, my real fear is that as we are a democracy, not DSC03238something that islam respects, this could become the norm in the UK (or whats left of it) within the next 25 years, if we don’t stop the spread of this pernicious, so called religion. I really don’t want my Grandkids having to grow up wearing a Burka or a beard. I used to work with so called “moderate muslims”, they were lovely moral people in every respect. But it’s no use relying upon these so called “moderate muslims”, they are cowed by the extremists and would fear the bearded ones in the mosque and being accused of apostasy.

20140315 – Kurt, Fiona and Jasper; Requiem for rear entry

Saturday – sunny but cold.

IMG 2693

Kurt, Fiona and Jaspers first day, so they have a lazy day. Supermarkets, walk and Outlet Centre. Jaspers in his Chariot. Great pushchair, Wendy will be able to go jogging with Jasper in it.

Picked up a great windproof jacket from Columbia Outlet, only £60.

Sunday – blue bird day.

Take Fiona on the magic carpet for her first day’s skiing. She’s only had a 1 hour taster lesson at Chill Factor, so can’t believe how good she is. Snow plough turns and stops are no problem to her. She’s even linking the turns and traversing no problem. Has good ski control and soon gets bored with the nursery slope.

Meet Wendy and Jasper for lunch on the deck.

My 20 year old rear entry boots are really on their last legs. Nothing’s built to last these DSC03106days. Back is coming loose, strap has come off and interior’s starting to decay.

Call in a few ski shops and try some new ski boots. Every one laughs at my rear entry boots.

End up liking some Technica’s but as the fitter says they’ll be a lot tighter, firmer and more difficult to get into but will improve my skiing – sales talk? Have identified my preferred boots so wait until Tuesday nights block buster sale at Cole Sports.

DSC03112

Jacuzzi in the evening, along with well deserved beer.

Monday – cloudy, very windy and snow. End up getting 7’’.

Fiona’s done that well that Kurt and I take her up to the top of the mountain, 9,250 feet. She’s technically ready for this and can manage good turns and most importantly stop. Came down Home run and then Claim Jumper.  Fiona “papped herself” with the wind and slope. Then to add insult to injury a skier skied into her. Had a drink in Snow Hut and then Silver Load to the top again. Wind and snow was worse by now. Skied and walked down to Town Lift in the hope that Fiona could download to PC and I could then pick her up in the car. By now the wind was that bad that Town Lift and Crescent lift were closed. Fiona was exhausted. I flagged down a ski patroller on a snow mobile and they shipped Fiona down on the back of the snow mobile.

IMG 2700

A bit of a disastrous day for Fiona, 30 mph wind, snow and being skied into really didn’t help. She’s lost confidence. Sad really because she’s got the ability. Her turns and technique are more than adequate to cope. But it’s all about confidence.

Meet Wendy again for lunch at Payday.

Kurt and Fiona have an afternoon nap so that they’re ready for a trip down Main Street for a meal and some booze. We look after Jasper.

Tuesday – cold, sun and cloud.

Chione

Merciful thanks to Chione (a tasty nymph and goddess of snow) for the 7″ of powder. Orgasmic. All gratefully received. And a special thanks to Jasper, shouting for his Dada, Dada, for waking us up at 06:00 so that I’m ready for the onslaught.

Kurt and I get up on the slopes for 8:45 to get a couple of hours skiing in. Two hours, 10 runs, 25 miles and maximum speed of 39 mph. A great mornings skiing. Amazing we manage to get in as much skiing as most tourist manage in a full day.

The it’s back home, change, some lunch and off to Hogle zoo for Jasper. It’s a neat little zoo. Just big enough for a youngster.

There’s want. There’s need. Then there’s reckless endangerment via merchandising with “is there something we can buy?”.

Then it’s back home and I nip down to Cole Sport to join a queue for the opening of the IMG 2712 ole Sport blockbuster sale. Yes, I actually joined a queue for 20 minutes to buy me new Technica ski boots. $700 boots for $350, that’s 50%  off. Well worth the trouble. Takes me 10 minutes to buy the boots I tried on the other day. Organised. That’s how to do it.

It’s good by comfy, old faithful, rear entry (nothing obscene about them) ski boots. For 20 years you’ve served me well, kept me warm, kept me safe and given me months of very comfortable skiing. Let’s hope the new technical marvels are as good.

Hal, Carol and of course Angela come round for dinner. They get to meet Jasper who gets on well with Angela. Have a good dinner and of course some wine.

Wednesday – blue bird day but quite cold that fortunately keeps the snow feeling good.

IMG 2773An early morning, 06:00, just wouldn’t be the same without the Tweenies. I can feel my brain turning to jelly by 08:00. Then of course there’s Thomas The Tank, so much more intellectual.

Fiona’s got over her fear and is ready for some more skiing. Off up to PCMR we all go and Fiona spends an hour on the magic carpet while I go off to break in my new boots, on Jonesys of course. They’re certainly more difficult to get on, tight, firm and less flex than my old slippers.

After an hour Fiona’s ready for the green run First Time and seems to have overcome her fear. She’s doing some great skiing and amazing turns – she is a natural, despite her doubts.

Just look at this picture of a snow board instructor showing 5 year olds how to choose the best place for a siesta on the mountain. “Always choose the narrowest and most inconvenient place and spread yourselves out”. Then we wonder why they grow up with no consideration for others and the skiers code.

IMG 2754

IMG 2747

Meet Wendy and Jasper for lunch. Then after lunch Fiona does some more runs down First Time and Turtle. I nip up and do a run down Payday. By the time I meet up with Kurt and Fiona again she’s getting pretty tired and legs aching so it’s time for home. She’s doing really well and is technically really ready for Home Run and the top of the mountain.

Jacuzzi time complete with a beer.

20140312 – More Blue Bird days; It ain’t half hot; The kids arrive

Wednesday – cold blue bird day. 2” new snow over night.

IMG 2649

Awesome mornings skiing with Carol. Snow was great. Even managed to sneak in and survive Silver King, along with a couple of other blacks and the double blue from hell – Sunrise. I think the speedometer on this app needs a little calibration.

Wendy spends the morning preparing the place for Kurt, Fiona and Jasper. What’s to prepare? Then in the afternoon she goes out with Carol and Angela. Shopping I think.

This guy just says it like it is. About time we had more of his rants http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z38qqSZZEc.

You can see and enjoy all his rants on YouTube.

Thursday – another blue bird day but no sign of Wendy. She’s volunteering at the hospital.

Another totally bodacious day. Snows great despite the heat wave. After yesterday’s tour de force with Carol todays theme is control. Lots of short turns to keep that speed down.

But will it last?

Tears as my old faithful, slipper comfort, 20 year old, rear entry ski boots are starting to IMG 0889drop to pieces. Nothing’s built to last these days. It’s either a new pair or some araldite.

Why do all the shops laugh at these antiques when I go in?

Sadly new pairs aren’t anywhere near as comfy.

Is this the sort of free speech and censorship we’ll have to tolerate when we become a muslim / sharia state:

The BBC has controversially dropped a debate on homosexuality from a live panel discussion show because of objections from Birmingham Central Mosque in which the programme was being filmed.

As first reported by Breitbart London, the BBC Three live debate and discussion show aimed at young people, Free Speech, had intended to ask the question, When will it be accepted to be Muslim and gay? However the show’s host Rick Edwards, announced that the debate would not take place as planned. He told the audience:

We were going to debate that question today, but after speaking to the Mosque, they have expressed deep concerns with having that discussion here.

After agreeing to allow a programme called Free Speech to be filmed at the Mosque, it is absurd and counterproductive to then censor the topic being discussed.

It is unfortunate that the BBC allowed itself to be censored on this occasion by reactionary imams.

Am I surprised!

Friday – another blue bird day. Too warm.

Out for a serious days skiing before the kids arrive. End up stuck at the bottom of Silver Load. Lifts broke.

Still it could be worse, I’m by the log fire in the Snowhut, with fresh coffee, plus plenty of beer and good food if needed.

Pick up SUV from Hertz. What a palaver. They have a Nissan xterra crap mobile for me. Spend 5 minutes looking for the wing mirror adjustments, then Miss Hertz spends 5 minutes searching. Brand new 2014 vehicle and they’re manual wing mirrors. Will I have to advance and retard the spark? Where’s the little man with the red flag? Unbelievable.

Insist upon my free Presidents circle upgrade and then spend an hour loosing the will to live while they get their act together. They’ve had 3 weeks to get me a car. I really am starting to loose faith with them, every time just lately there’s a cock up. Madder than a baptist in a brothel.

Pick up kurt, Fiona and Jasper at Salt Lake airport. They’re totally powfagged after 2 flights with a 10 month old fidget arse. But at least they’re here now. Wendy’s dead excited.

Muhammad’s Deadly Teachings about Personal Hygiene

Muhammad’s followers often went to him for advice on various topics. His advice, however, wasn’t always sound. According to Muhammad, it’s perfectly safe to use water that has human waste or dead animals floating in it. Muhammad promoted dunking flies in one’s food, in order to get the cure for the diseases that flies carry. Needless to say, these teachings are quite dangerous.

So if his word is so sacred why aren’t all muslims following his advice? Seems a little selective, picking and choosing what they like. Now there’s a surprise.
